Closet Organization Systems

One easy way to solve a storage problem with a minimum of fuss and expense is to put in a wire closet system. These systems, made of vinyl- or chrome-coated wire, are easy for the do-it-yourselfer to install--in fact, you can probably organize an entire closet with one of these in a single afternoon. The two main types of closet organization systems you can install are a A Wire Shelf Storage System or a Track-Mounted Closet Shelving System.

One style is a simple wire shelf that is attached to the wall with a small hook made for that purpose and supported by a diagonal metal brace. You can hang just one of these or outfit an entire closet with them.

The other style is a track-mounted shelving system. Here, you can see how to install a system of wire shelves that mount on standards hanging from a horizontal track. With this type of system, because all the standards attach to a single, level track, you do not have to level each shelf as you install it. Every shelf that sits on brackets inserted into the standards will automatically align properly.

Most systems are fastened to the wall studs using screws. Use an electronic stud finder to locate stud positions. If there are not studs where you need them, you can fasten the systems to the walls with toggle bolts or expanding anchors, but be aware that these methods are not as strong as attaching to studs.

You can have your shelves and tracks cut to length, or cut the pieces yourself using a hacksaw (you can also use a bolt cutter to cut the wire).
