Expert Advice for Home Improvement & DIY Repair
Choosing a Contractor for Your Factory-Built Home

Most retailers of manufactured homes arrange for installation, either by their own contractors or by independent experienced installers. Installation is often included in your contract price. If so, obtain a written description of the installation services from your retailer. Make sure the four issues detailed in Properly Installing a Manufactured Home are incorporated into an itemized written list before you sign the purchase contract.

If installation isn’t included, you will need to hire a professional yourself. Ask for recommendations from your retailer. Though manufacturers of factory-built homes provide instructions for proper home installation, assembling a factory-built home is a specialty.

When interviewing a contractor, be sure to get references.

Whether a contractor or your retailer installs your home, find out if there is a written warranty for the installation. If there isn’t, request that the contractor put any promises or claims regarding the installation in writing. Also ask the contractor to clarify the installation process for you and to detail in writing the extent of the work in your agreement.
