Swimming Pool Heaters: Gas |
Gas heaters are the most popular type of pool heater because of the relatively low cost of the fuel. In addition, they're convenient and tend to heat water quickly because they use a direct flame. Gas heaters run on either propane or natural gas and are divided into three distinct types:
Convection heaters A large flame heats a steady stream of slow-moving water to a very high temperature. This type of heater is suitable for small pools and spas.
Tank heaters A small flame heats a large volume of water; it's cost-effective but not sufficient in cold climates.
Coil (or flash) heaters This is the most common type of gas heater. A large flame rapidly heats a coil through which a small but fast-moving stream of water passes. Although the most expensive since they consume the largest quantity of fuel, coil heaters can do the job for any size pool or spa.
