How to Adjust a Garage Door Opener

Following are a few simple adjustments to keep your garage door operating properly and safely with a standard garage door opener. Be sure to refer to your owner's manual for proper calibrations.

Adjust the up/down limits
With the door closed, press the open button on the wall control panel. If the door opens at least 5 feet but not completely, turn the limit-adjustment screw clockwise. If the door will not close, turn the down-adjustment screw counterclockwise. If nothing is blocking the sensors yet the door reverses when closing, increase the down force.

Adjust the force
If the door does not open at least 5 feet, increase the up force. Press the down button on the control panel. While the door is descending, grab the bottom. If the door does not reverse, or if it reverses while closing, decrease the down force. To adjust the up force, grab the door as it is opening. If the door does not stop, decrease the up force.

Adjust the safety reverse
To test the safety reverse system, close the door on a 2 by 4. If the door stops but does not reverse, increase the down limit one-quarter turn clockwise, and then repeat the test.
