How to Frame a Doorway
Framing a doorway is not difficult but it requires precise measurements and a steady hand.

Measure the rough opening for the door, and mark its center point on the ceiling. In each direction from that point, measure half the door’s width, and make those marks on the ceiling. They will be the inside edge of each trimmer stud.

Measure 3 1/2 inches farther out on both sides; these marks will indicate the inside edges of the king studs. Cut the king studs to fit, and nail them to the plates on each side of the doorway.

Cut the trimmer studs to the height of the door’s rough opening, and nail them to the king studs with 3-inch nails spaced about every 12 inches in a staggered pattern.

Cut the header, and nail it to the trimmer and king studs. Then cut the cripples, and nail them to the header and to the top plate. Cut through the bottom plate with a handsaw. Remove the piece within the doorway and install the door frame.
