How to Pull Wires in Electrical Conduit

By +Don Vandervort, HomeTips

Once you have your conduit and electrical boxes in place, you are ready to thread through the wires:

1) Pull #10, #12, or #14 wires through the electrical conduit using a fish tape, unreeling the tape until it comes out the other end.

2) After stripping several inches of insulation off the end of the wires, bend the exposed wires snugly over the fish tape loop and wrap the wires to it with electrical tape.

3) Now, rewind the fish tape to pull the wires through. It helps greatly if you have a helper that can apply “pulling lubricant” to the wires as they are fed into the conduit. The lubricant allows the conductors to slide more freely, which also helps ensure that no damage occurs to their insulation.

It will also be easier to pull the conduit if you cut the wires to the length of the conduit plus about 3 feet and lay them out at the end of the conduit in a straight line.
