Noise is one of the major complaints homeowners have with their heat pumps. Heat pumps make noise; it’s unavoidable. The large fans needed to exchange air, the compressors, and the pumps can make for an annoying background din during all seasons.
One advantage that newer heat pumps have over older models is that new sound insulation techniques have significantly helped quiet the motors during operation. When selecting a heat pump, look for a unit with an outdoor sound rating of less than 7.6 bels (76 decibels). Also talk to the dealer about the availability of noise reducing platforms and sound screens.
When it comes time for installation, place the heat pump in a location that isn’t near operable windows or high-traffic areas.
