To replace damaged ceramic tiles you will need:

* Replacement tiles
* A glass cutter
* A steel straightedge
* A putty knife
* Tile adhesive
* A nailset
* A wooden block
* A sponge
* Grout

Using a glass cutter and a steel straightedge, heavily score an X across the face of the tile from corner to corner through the center.

Punch a hole through the center of the damaged tile with a hammer and nailset. Avoid damaging the backing as you work. Be sure to wear safety glasses whenever striking tile with a tool.

Working from the center toward the edges, chip out the tile with a cold chisel and a hammer, using light, rapid blows. Remove all old adhesive and grout behind the tile. Use sandpaper to smooth rough spots; then dust off the area. Level the backing with patching plaster, if necessary. Prime the surface when dry.

When the primer is dry, spread mastic on the tile, keeping it 1/2 inch back from the edges. Center the tile and gently tap it flush with the surface with a wood block.

Allow 24 hours for the mastic to dry, then fill the joints with grout, using a damp sponge or cloth. Smooth the joints with a wet finger. Sponge off excess grout.
