Telephone Circuit Basics

Telephone circuits require the use of at least two wires. The pair consists of a "tip" wire and a "ring" wire, the former usually green and the latter red. Throughout your home’s telephone system, always connect the green to the green and the red to the red.

Certain types of wire have different color-coding. Simply utilize the chart below to make your connections.

Alternate Types
RedBlue with white bands
Blue

Green
White with blue bands
Yellow
Orange with white bands
Orange
BlackWhite with orange bands
