Tissue Paper Paint Texture Effects

tissue paper faux paintingFrom burnished gold to hand-rubbed leather, amazing finishes result from manipulating tissue paper and wallpaper paste on a wall.

You can use these materials simply to create an interesting texture that gives walls an organic, handmade look, or, by choosing colors carefully, you can create faux effects.

For the look of gold leaf, paint the textured surface gold and then rub it with a reddish glaze. For leather, choose paint that’s reddish brown, brown, or tan and use a darker glaze.

If you aren’t aiming for a faux look but simply want a beautifully textured wall, you can stop after you paint the surface or you can top it with a glaze that brings out the texture. Use a glaze two shades darker than the paint.

Materials and tools you’ll need:

  • Wallpaper paste
  • Primer, if necessary
  • Tissue paper (enough to cover walls, plus a bit extra)
  • Paint (eggshell sheen)
  • Glaze, if desired

  • Pigment or paint to tint glaze
  • One or more rollers or brushes (for primer, paste, paint, and glaze)
  • Chip brushes (1 large, 1 small)
  • Paint tray
  • Cotton T-shirt rags
  • Disposable gloves

1. Read the label on the wallpaper paste, and, if indicated, prime the walls.

2. Tear edges off the tissue paper. Prepare enough sheets to cover the wall in one layer, plus a few extra sheets.

3. Crumple the sheets of tissue paper and then open them up.
4. Apply wallpaper adhesive to the wall with a roller or a brush. Make sure there are no lumps or bare spots.
5. Position a sheet of paper on the wall and press it into place. Keep the tissue as flat as possible, but don’t worry if there are wrinkles.
6. With a small chip brush, smooth out some of the wrinkles and manipulate the remaining ones into folds that are securely anchored in the wallpaper paste.
7. Apply another sheet to an adjoining section of the wall, overlapping the edge of the first sheet. Use the chip brush to smooth out the tissue or force it into sharp folds, and then tear off the overlapping tissue.
