Digging Under a Pathway to Lay Underground Pipes

The best way to excavate under a pathway is to create a tunnel with a strong blast of water. An inexpensive kit that contains a power nozzle and fittings will allow you to drive a length of PVC pipe through the soil, as shown below. A more expensive boring machine with a water-powered drill bit will also do the trick.

As an alternative, you can attach a length of threaded galvanized steel pipe to a garden hose, aim it under the walkway, and turn on the water full force. Remove the pipe once the soil is wet enough, cover the end of a PVC pipe with duct tape to keep the soil out, and feed it through the hole. Afterwards, remove the tape.
