The procedure for painting French doors is as follows:
1. Preparation of the wood is paramount. The best way to prepare to paint is to hang your doors unfinished and then remove them from the hinges after two or three days. This will allow the wood to adjust to the temperature and humidity levels of that location.
2. Thoroughly clean the door surfaces, clearing off any foreign material. Note any slight imperfections or blemishes on all six sides caused by handling. Sanding with a120-grit sandpaper will remove any of these problem areas. Always sand with the grain to avoid cross-grain scratching.
3. After sanding, wipe the door clean to remove dust and debris.
4. Apply at least one primer base coat and let it dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat if the wood is porous.
5. Apply a minimum of two coats of finish paint. Make sure to allow adequate drying time between applications.
6. After the door is thoroughly dry, re-hang it on the hinges.
7. If your French door opens to the outside, install airtight and watertight seals.
