If air is leaking around the perimeter of a door, simply replace the weatherstripping (if there is any).
Compression weatherstripping is the most common type. Steel doors may utilize magnetic weatherstripping.
It’s easiest to remove the door before replacing weatherstripping, so plan to do this on a warm day.
1) Use a hammer and a small pin punch or a nail to tap out the hinge pins.
2) Grip the knob, slightly open the door, and lift it off the hinges.
3) Pull off the old weatherstripping. If it’s the type that fits into a groove in the jamb, don’t attempt to pull out the brads that hold it in place. Instead, shear them off or drive them into the groove with an old chisel.
4) Cut the replacement weatherstripping to length, push it into the groove in the jamb, and refasten it with new 1-inch brads.
