VIDEO: Prevent Lint Fires in Your Clothes Dryer

A dryer fire is caused by heat build up around lint, and a dryer fire can turn from a small problem into a major disaster in a matter of minutes.

Keeping the lint screen clean does help, but the most dangerous culprit is the lint that builds up deep in the dryer's exhaust vent (duct). It can be difficult to see, but when this lint creates a blockage the problem becomes critical. If your dryer begins to require higher temperatures or multiple cycles to dry your clothes this can mean a dangerous amount of lint has built up in your vent.

It is important to clean your dryer's lint screen before every cycle, and to clean the dryer vent periodically. Never use plastic or foil ducting hose; replace this with corrugated metal or rigid ducting. Also periodically slide the dryer away from the wall and thoroughly clean behind the appliance where lint accumulates.
