Garbage Disposal Doesn't Run or Hum, or Runs Intermittently
When a garbage disposal doesn't run or even hum at the throw of its switch, it usually means it isn't receiving power, or an overload has caused the circuit breaker to shut down the unit.
1) Look for a reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Allow the disposal to cool, push the reset button, and try the disposal again.
2) Be sure the disposal is plugged into a working receptacle. Plug something that works into the disposal's receptacle under the sink to see if it's receiving power. If it isn't, replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker.
If the disposal runs intermittently, the switch or stopper may be defective, and you will need to replace it. Before working on the disposal, be sure to disconnect its power.
