Mosquitoes and fleas are some of the most insidious house and garden pests because in addition to their painful bites, they can also carry disease. A number of remedies exist to repel them.
Mosquitoes
The best way to prevent a mosquito propulation is by encouraging natural predators such as dragonflies and praying mantises. Also eliminate pools of stagnant water and avoide wearing perfume, bright colors, flowery prints, and bright jewelry, all of which attract mosquitoes.
Citronella. Burn citronella candles to repel the insects. Tansy or Basil. Plant tansy or basil around the patio and house to repel mosquitoes.
Fleas
The only non-chemical way to remove fleas and their eggs from your household is to vacuum thoroughly, remove the vacuum bag, seal it, and dispose of it immediately outside your home.
Vinegar. A ratio of 1 teaspoon vinegar to 1 quart water (per 40 pounds of weight) in drinking water helps to keep your pet free of fleas and ticks.
Fennel, Rosemary, Red Cedar Shavings, Sassafras, Eucalyptus, or Pennyroyal. Spread leaves or shavings of these plants under and around the pet's bed.
