Also, this was easy to push in the rubber piece, and even though it was easier if one pulled and another fed it in straight, I was able to do it by myself. I pulled it through the slots as far as it would go, then went to the feed end and pushed it in as far as it would go, and repeated. It was 70 degrees outside so the rubber was not stiff. The manufacturer states the rubber is still flexible at low temperatures, though. It was not difficult to pull through because of how the rubber strip was wrapped tightly around the metal pieces in the packaging so it was deformed on the edges a but, and did not have to cut it. I still had a couple feet I cut off since it was more than 18 feet long.
Anyway, I screwed each piece end to end and cut off the the excess on the end piece. I also got the rubber strip fed into the first piece a couple inches before screwing it on, as the instructions stated to do (otherwise it is difficult to feed in to get it started). Cut the end of the excess rubber strip off and that is it.
I did not find any other product like this one available that would have worked in place of the piece I took off. I really tried to press that long steel piece back in, but it would not go back in. It may have been slid in before the bottom panel was bolted on the door. This product is lighter so easier on the springs.
I am pleased to have this problem fixed well, and out of my hair.
1- as other reviewer point out, it’s a great value and easy to install. Product seems to be holding up very well since installing several months ago.
2- I used a hacksaw to cut the metal plates to size for two small garage doors. Make sure you line up the channel as perfectly as possible because you need to shove the rubber/vinyl strip thru there later and any snags can be a pain. I cut the rubber strip with just a simple box blade.
3- when installing the metal plates, use duct tape to hold them in place and line up one plate to the next as seamlessly as possible. This can take some time to get perfect… but definitely take extra time to try and achieve perfection. You will thank yourself later when pulling and pushing the rubber strip through there.
4- the “gap” this product covers. Here’s a tidbit you need to understand before you purchase and have expectations—- my old strips were crunched down and didn’t maintain a rounded shape after many years of being crushed under the garage doors. So, I bought this product to create a better seal along the floor. After adjusting my garage door openers slightly, one door has a much better seal, but the other door has about the same amount of seal to the ground/floor. Why? Well, it’s not the manufacturer’s fault… nor is it an installation mistake on my part. I couldn’t tell prior to replacing these seals that the reason one door had crushed down so badly on the old strip was because the door bottom doesn’t close parallel to the floor, it’s slightly shifted (maybe about 2 degrees) so one side seals really well, but the other side is raised off the ground a slight bit. Either I can crush this new strip down on one side to narrow the gap on the other side, or… what I’ll probably do soon is install a new threshold underneath where the door “seals” to the ground and shim that threshold up a bit to make a perfect seal. I do plan to replace one of my garage openers in the near future as well and may ask the contractor if it’s possible to (easily, aka ‘cheaply’) adjust the door, which I don’t think will be practical since the top of the door is perfectly parallel to the trim above the garage door. Adjustment would fix one problem, but create an aesthetic issue in its place. I’m OCD, which makes me take on even complex problems so they’re done “right”… which is a good trait. However, if I adjusted the door and it wasn’t parallel at the top… I’d look at that issue every.single.day and it’d drive me nuts! I’m especially critical of my own work no matter the minority of detail.
