If your toilet has a weak flush or the bowl swirl looks uneven, clogged toilet rim jets are often the cause. Mineral deposits (limescale) can clog the small rim jets located in the flush passages under the toilet bowl rim. When these openings become restricted, less water enters the bowl during a flush, usually resulting in weak or uneven flush. Cleaning the limescale deposits out of the rim jets often restores a strong flush.
Method 1: Dissolve Mineral Deposits with Vinegar
White vinegar is a safe way to dissolve mineral buildup inside the toilet rim-jet passages.
Tools and materials:
- White vinegar
- Small mirror
- Rubber gloves
- Stiff wire, zip tie, or small nylon brush
- Funnel
Step-by-step instructions:
- Turn off the water supply. Close the shutoff valve located behind the toilet (turn it clockwise).
- Flush the toilet. This empties most of the water from the tank.
- Inspect the rim jets. Use a small mirror to look up under the rim. White or crusty buildup often indicates mineral deposits.
- Loosen heavy deposits. Gently insert a stiff wire, zip tie, or small nylon brush into each rim-jet opening to loosen buildup.
- Pour vinegar into the overflow tube. Remove the tank lid and place a funnel into the overflow tube. Slowly pour about 2 to 4 cups of white vinegar into the tube so it flows into the internal rinse passages.
- Allow the vinegar to soak. Let the vinegar sit for at least 2 to 3 hours. For heavier buildup, allow it to soak overnight.
- Turn the water supply back on. Let the tank refill.
- Flush the toilet several times to rinse the passages and clear loosened deposits.
Method 2: Use CLR for Heavy Mineral Buildup
If vinegar does not dissolve the buildup, a stronger cleaner such as CLR may help.
Safety notes:
- Wear gloves and provide ventilation.
- Never mix CLR with bleach or other cleaners.
- Follow all instructions on the product label.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Turn off the water supply and flush the toilet to empty most of the tank.
- Inspect the rim jets using a mirror and loosen any visible deposits with a nylon brush or zip tie.
- Pour CLR into the overflow tube. Using a funnel, slowly pour about 1 to 2 cups of CLR into the overflow tube.
- Allow the cleaner to sit for the amount of time recommended on the product label.
- Turn the water supply back on and allow the tank to refill.
- Flush the toilet several times to thoroughly rinse the system.
When Cleaning Rim Jets Helps
Cleaning rim jets often improves flushing performance when the toilet:
- flushes weakly
- swirls unevenly
- sends too little water around the bowl rim
Cleaning the rim jets typically improves flushing strength but does not usually change the standing water level in the bowl.
