FAQs

If your garbage disposal suddenly stops working, don’t assume it’s broken. Most failures are caused by simple issues like power interruptions or minor jams.

Quick Answer

If your garbage disposal isn’t working, it’s usually due to a tripped reset button, a power issue, or a jam. Start by pressing the reset button and checking the outlet before trying anything more involved.

For a full troubleshooting guide, see Garbage Disposal Problems.

Start Here: What Is It Doing?

Start by identifying the symptom:

  • No sound at all: Power issue
  • Humming sound: Jammed motor
  • Stops suddenly: Overload or reset triggered

Diagnostic Table

What you noticeLikely causeWhat to do
No soundNo powerCheck outlet, breaker, reset button
HummingJammed impellerClear jam manually
Stops suddenlyOverload protectionPress reset button
Works intermittentlyLoose wiring or failing motorInspect or replace unit

Garbage Disposal Not Working (No Sound)

If nothing happens when you flip the switch, the disposal is likely not getting power.

Start with these steps:

  • Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit
  • Check the electrical outlet
  • Reset the circuit breaker

Many disposals are connected to a GFCI outlet. If it has tripped, reset it before testing again.

Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Working

If the unit hums but doesn’t spin, the motor is trying to run but is jammed.

To fix a jam safely:

  • Turn off power completely
  • Insert a hex wrench into the bottom slot
  • Turn back and forth to free the impeller

For full instructions, see Garbage Disposal Humming.

Reset Button: What It Does

The reset button protects the motor from overheating. If the disposal stops suddenly, it may have tripped.

To reset:

  • Locate the button on the bottom of the unit
  • Press it firmly
  • Wait a few minutes and test the unit

Check Power and Outlet

If resetting doesn’t work, check the electrical supply:

  • Test the outlet with another appliance
  • Check for a tripped GFCI outlet
  • Inspect the breaker panel

If the disposal is hardwired, the issue may require electrical repair.

When to Call a Pro

If the disposal still won’t work after basic checks, the problem may be more serious. Call a pro if:

  • The unit won’t reset
  • There is no power and wiring is suspect
  • The motor is failing or overheats repeatedly

If you’re unsure who to call, see Plumber vs. Drain Cleaning Service.

If the problem is more complicated than expected, you can find a qualified plumber near you.
