Installing Interior Columns
Prefabricated columns are usually sold in three pieces: a base, a shaft, and a capital. With some, the base and capital are made like sleeves to fit over the shaft and hold it in place.Others require you to install the base and capital first and then fit the shaft between them.

Decide on the best position for the columns and make marks on the floor that will be the center points of the bases. Then, using a plumb bob, mark the points that are straight above them on the ceiling. These will be the center points of the capitals.

Using the center points you marked, draw the outlines for the bases and capitals, making sure that one edge is parallel to the doorway wall. These will be your guidelines to ensure the columns are straight.

For columns with sliding capitals and bases, measure the vertical distance between these two points. Cut the shafts of the columns to the measured height. Mount the shafts to the ceiling and floor with L brackets. Use shims, if necessary, to level and create a tight fit. Slide the capitals to the ceiling and nail them in place. Slide the bases to the floor and nail them in place.

For three-part columns, first nail the bases and capitals in place on the floor and ceiling. Then measure the distance between the two and cut the shafts to fit. Shim the shafts for a tight fit and toenail them in place. Caulk any gaps.
