How to Seal Windows & Doors

By +Don Vandervort, HomeTips

Making sure your windows and doors are relatively airtight is a good way to ensure you are not wasting money on heating and cooling. Sealing, or caulking, around drafty windows and doors is a simple DIY project.

An easy way to determine where you have air leaks is to light a candle or some incense and move it close to the edges of each window and door. If the smoke is drawn suddenly in a different direction, you know there is a draft coming from that location.

First, use a putty knife to remove any existing caulk around the interior trim of the window or door, and clean the surface. Then use a caulking gun to apply new silicone or silicone-impregnated latex caulk.

A less visible but more intensive approach is to pry off the interior trim and then insert non- expanding foam into the rough opening between your walls and your doors and windows.
