Trex and Composite Decking: Maintenance and Cleaning
TREX composite decking maintenance
Even though composite decking requires less care than traditional wood decking, it still needs occasional cleaning and care. You should clean the decking material at least twice a year (spring and fall) to remove any build-up.

For removing most dirt and grime, a simple soap solution and soft bristle brush works well. Power washers should not be used on composite decking as they may mar the finish and damage the decking material.

Because of the organic ingredients in composite decking (wood), black mold can be a serious problem. If you start to see mold growing on your deck (it will look similar to that black gunk that grows in your shower) treat it immediately with a solution of 3/4-cup bleach to 1 gallon of water.

Keeping your deck well drained and free of dirt will greatly reduce the chance of mold growing. Be sure to check with your manufacturers cleaning instructions and warranty if the mold comes back or spreads. Commercial grade composite deck cleaners are available, and may be a wise investment in areas of high humidity and heavy rain.

Stains are a common problem with composite decking. Grease and oil can permanently stain the surface of composite decking material and should be removed as quickly as possible using a household cleaning agent. Dishwashing soap with de-greasers works well, but if the stain is large or has had time to set, a more powerful solvent may be needed. Likewise wine and berry stains can be troublesome and should be removed as quickly as possible with soap and water.

Do not try to remove snow and ice with a metal snow shovel as the composite surface can easily be scratched or gouged. Rock salt can be used to clear decking areas—the salt should be washed clear of the deck after the freezing season ends.

Over time, composite decking will begin to weather. During the first few years of ownership, weathering may help to hide some of the stains and blemishes of use. Scrapes tend to be softened and smoothed out, and stains will fade as well. If the surface begins to take on a powdery finish, it may be necessary to stain or paint the decking material to renew the appearance. Be sure to follow all of the manufacturer’s recommendations if you decide to do this. Once painted or stained, annual maintenance will probably increase because you’ll need to maintain the finish. Be advised that some composite materials do not take and hold paint as well as others.

With regular cleaning and maintenance, composite decks should easily outlast traditional wood decks and provide your home with an attractive and durable living space.
